Tip of the day: Don’t take anything personally

Sometimes life lessons come in waves… We get daily reminders that we have something to work on… People around us have similar experiences… Clients bring the same issue to healing sessions… If this is happening in your life, take a moment to pause and reflect, to consider why these reminders are coming and what work you have to do, what lesson you have to learn.

One lesson that has been coming up for me is how we allow the words of others to hurt us, how we give those words power, how we accept them as truths rather than beliefs or opinions.

So if you find yourself wounded by the words of others, consider these words from Don Miguel Ruiz, the second of The Four Agreements:

“Don’t take anything personally.”

The reward?

“immunity in the middle of hell is the gift of this agreement.”

Per Don Miguel’s book:
“Whatever happens around you, don’t take it personally… Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world.

Even when a situation seems so personal, even if others insult you directly, it has nothing to do with you. What they say, what they do, and the opinions they give are according to the agreements they have in their own minds…

Taking things personally makes you easy prey for these predators, the black magicians. They can hook you easily with one little opinion and feed you whatever poison they want, and because you take it personally, you eat it up….

But if you do not take it personally, you are immune in the middle of hell. Immunity in the middle of hell is the gift of this agreement.”

Do you remember those words our mothers used to tell us?

“Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can never hurt us.”

Find some peace today, knowing that your opinion is the one that counts! And, of course, knowing that your mother was right!
