Coeur-ageous Magic for the New Moon in Leo

Getting ready to make a Courage Essential Oil Blend

The New Moon in Leo arrives 23-July @ 02:45 AM Pacific Time / 09:45 UTC. Are you ready to enter this new doorway of transformation?

Silver RavenWolf, in her book The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation Solitary Witch, suggests the New Moon in Leo is a good time for spells for courage, strength, success, and leadership.

Sounds good to me, as I’m working with coeur-age this month!

There are very many Courage Spells and rituals but I like this simple Enhancing Courage Spell from Ann Moura’s Grimoire for the Green Witch (p. 279)

ENHANCING COURAGE SPELL
For this ritual, done in a Waxing to Full Moon, you will need a red candle and either some Rosemary Essential Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis) or a Courage Essential Oil Blend.

I like this recipe for Courage Essential Oil Blend from Scott Cunningham’s The Complete Book of Incense Oils & Brews (p. 112):

  • 3 drops Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber officinale)
  • 1 drop Black Pepper EO (Piper nigrum)
  • 1 drop Clove/Clove Bud EO (see NOTE  below)
    • NOTE: Mountain Rose Herbs lists their Clove Bud as Syzygium aromaticum but Aromatics International labels their Clove bud as Eugenia Caryophyllata (as does mine in the picture above).

If you prefer not to touch these oils directly, add the drops to one tablespoon of your preferred carrier oil. You can then use this diluted blend on your skin for a little bump of courage when needed.

No essential oils? No problem! If you have any dragon’s blood or frankincense, light these in an appropriate burner and waft your candle through the smoke. Or pick up a sprig of rosemary from your grocery store or garden, and use it as a smudge.

START THE RITUAL

Before you begin the ritual, meditate on the Strength and Courage you are seeking and create an affirmation for it.

Then, begin with your own personal rituals for spell crafting or ceremonies such as grounding and centering; casting the circle; calling in the directions; calling in your guides, ancestors, angels, goddess(es), etc.

Anoint/rub the candle with your oil (or smudge it with your incense), then inscribe with an appropriate runic (or other) symbol.

I love working with the WomenRunes created by Shekhinah Mountainwater (perhaps The Flying Woman, the Rune of Transformation, or The Heart, the Rune of Love & Passion?) or these choices recommended by Moura:

FEOH (aka FEHU) for energy
THORN (aka THOR) for protection and willpower
MANNAZ (aka MAN) or self-improvement
KEN (aka CEN) for opening of positive energy
UR for personal strength
DAEG for a fresh start
SIGEL for achievement and self-confidence
TYR (aka TIW) for victory, courage, and success

You can also choose to etch in your personal sun sign or ruling planet sign.

fullsizeoutput_1f15

Rune names and meanings

Light the candle and wave your wand, or favourite crystal, above it while saying these words from Ann Moura or something in your own words with the same/similar meaning:

“I call upon the Powers of Earth, Air, Fire and Water; the energies of the ancient runes; the spirits of the hoary planets! As this candle melts, may these qualities __________________ [insert your qualities or affirmation here] I seek enter into me, that as I will, So Mote It Be!

Close the ritual with your preferred way (closing the circle, directions, etc), and be sure to give your gratitude to those you called upon for guidance during the ritual.

NEW MOON BLESSINGS!

PART ONE: MOON ENERGIES

This New Moon in July is always one near to my heart, for many reasons. It is in the Fire sign of Leo, a sign of courage, creativity and passion… and the heart (“coeur“-age), both physically and energetically. And it arrives just a week before Lughnasadh, the cross-quarter date associated with the First Harvest (grain) commonly celebrated on August 1st or thereabouts… more on Lammas traditions and dates in posts within the next week.

The Wheel of the Year is turning towards Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, the Third /Waxing Quarter, the West of the year. This is a time to reflect on the goals, intentions or words created roughly six months ago at Imbolc or at the New Year…. a mid-point review, as it were.

Did you know that the questions we ask of the Moon Phases in the New Moon Medicine Wheel layout can also be applied to our Soul Work at the Cross-Quarter Days?

East & Imbolc: What is beginning?
South & Beltaine: what is flourishing?
West & Lughnasadh: What is transforming?
North & Samhain: What is the lesson?

And this gave me my theme for this month… not just Coeur-age but Coeur-ageous transformation… looking at how I have transformed this year, what transformation is still shifting, moving, changing and how my connection to Heart supports that.

Perhaps one of these themes works for you… or perhaps something you create will resonate even more, based on your Soul Work so far this year?

SOUL QUESTIONS FOR THE NEW MOON

SM 800 x 800-5

The New Moon has been described as an energetic doorway, inviting us in to connect with what we want to create. During these days of the Dark Moon / New Moon, I will step through that energetic doorway and journey to my own transformation and into my Heart to find my specific goals for this lunar journey (to be confirmed by the Waxing Crescent).

Last year, I created these Soul Questions for the New Moon in Leo. If you resonate with the theme Coeur-age, consider asking these when doing your New Moon layout or journey:

  • How do I honour my Heart and my Self?
  • How do I honour others in relationships such as my partner, friends, and family
  • Where (and when) might I need to raise my awareness (and practise) of self-care, self-love?

And let’s not ignore the Shadow side of love, especially when we are in the Dark/New Moon:

  • Where and when do I love too much or give too much?
  • Where and when do I expect too much or need too much?

Or perhaps these Soul Questions for Coeur-ageous transformation may work for you:

  • What has transformed in me or in my world since setting my goals (words, intentions) at Imbolc/New Year?
  • What actions did I take to support, honour and manifest those goals (words, intentions)?
  • What else must I do to continue supporting, honouring, and manifesting that which is still transforming?
  • How has my Heart supported me in my transformation… and how have I supported my Heart?

And let’s not ignore the Shadow side of Coeur-ageous transformation, especially when we are in the Dark/New Moon:

  • What part of my transformation or manifestations took me to a place of discomfort?
  • How did I resolve that discomfort… bury it again? bring it to the light? heal it? change it?

EXTRAS

To enhance your Soul Work this month, consider making this New Moon Essential Oil blend to add to your diffuser when meditating or journeying.

You can also add to one tbsp (15 ml) of your favourite carrier oil and use for anointing new spiritual tools. (Blend Source: Pagan Portals – Moon Magic (Kindle Edition)

  • 4 drops Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)
  • 3 drops Cedarwood EO (ATLAS – Cedrus atlantica; VIRGINIA – Juniperus virginiana)
  • 4 drops Sweet Orange EO (Citrus sinensis )

New Moon Blessings !

Introducing Shekhinah Mountainwater’s Moon Wheels (an essential part of my daily practice)

Wisdom from Seanmháthair Gealach (Grandmother Moon)
Moon Wheels, Energy Work, Rituals and Soul Work
For the Monthly Lunar Journey

In my earlier post today, I invited you to start working with a Moon Wheel in your daily / monthly spiritual practice.

So, rather than re-invent the wheel – literally, LOL – I share with you this rather old link giving instructions as to how to set up your Moon Wheel chart.

GW452H361

MoonWheel for the Alder Moon, by Shekhinah Mountainwater

These are the original instructions from Shekhinah Mountainwater, who pioneered much of this work. And the image above, “Alder Moon”, is an example of a Moon Wheel she created. So beautiful and imaginative!

I am so glad that Molly Remer of Brigid’s Grove introduced the Moon Wheel concept to me. She is carrying on much of Shekhinah’s work, and has published a beautiful set of her Woman Runes in card format.

Many other folks have created Moon Wheels as well, and you can easily Google other sources out there if you wish to find something which may suit you better.

TIPS:
I start my chart at each New Moon, while others start at the Full Moon. Do what works best for you.

Keep your charts together in a binder, booklet or even in your BOS (Book of Shadows) for reviewing the patterns month-to-month and throughout the solar year.

Chart whatever is important in YOUR life: your energy, your monthly flow, your sexual activity, your ovulation, your moods, your appetite, your daily card, etc. Use symbols, pictures, words… whatever comes easy to you (and will be able to understand when you later review!).

Do consider using the centre of the Moon Wheel to note details of your New Moon reading… or other pertinent information for YOU.

Like LaLuna, this chart flows counter-clockwise . . . but it doesn’t really matter as the illuminated side of LaLuna shifts depending on where you are in relation to the Equator!

This picture is a copy of a Moon Wheel I started last August; I entered my New Moon reading (that month I used the Woman Runes from Brigid’s Grove), my theme for the month (“coeur-age”), the dates, lunar phase dates, etc. Throughout the month I add in information that is imporant to me.

And those who are familiar with the WomanRunes symbols can also use them to note different aspects on their wheels.

NOTE: I would highly recommend the FREE course offered by Brigid’s Grove on the WomanRunes

Go wild with your creativity and make the Moon Wheels uniquely your own.

New Moon Supermoon in Cancer: Authentic Self (Re)Born

Wisdom from Seanmháthair Gealach (Grandmother Moon)
New Moon Supermoon in Cancer
Arrives June 24th @ 2:31 UTC / June 23rd at 7:31 PM Pacific Time
Theme: Authentic Self (Re)Born
🌚🌑🌚

A New Moon (and Supermoon) in Cancer tonight! Such a powerful connection to The Mother archetype — the Great Creatrix — and to our own creativity, to our emotions, and to our Self. And just a few days after the Summer Solstice, which I am still feeling very strongly!

Normally at the New Moon, I work with the Maiden Goddesses but the powerful combination of Solstice and the sign of Cancer calls for The Mother! I will be working with Danú — the Great Mother — for support in this lunar journey. Other Mother goddesses are Gaia, Demeter, Hestia, Isis and Green Tara, and many more.

With which of the Mother Goddesses do you connect most strongly? If you do not have a Mother Goddess as an ally, perhaps use your New Moon time and ritual to invite one to work with you. Perhaps just listening to “Mother I Feel You” (see below) can bring her forth!

This powerful combination has also inspired my personal theme for this month: “Authentic Self Reborn”. Solstice is a time for new beginnings, Cancer is about Home, Self and emotion . . . and the Mother energy is all about birth, rebirth and creativity. Combined they call to me to step bravely into my authentic Self to (re)birth it and to share it with the world. As Jean Shinoda Bolen says, I am embracing being a “juicy crone”!

Feel free to use this theme in your Soul Work this month or meditate on it — and that powerful combination of Solstice, the Sun sign Cancer and the New Moon — and allow it to inspire your own unique theme.

SOUL WORK
Those of you who have been in this group for a while, know that I always recommend doing a New Moon reading in the lunar period leading up to the first glimmer of light of the Waxing Crescent, and framing it with your theme for the month.

Be sure to first complete your previous month’s reading, taking the lessons from your Soul Work and readings throughout the month, and build those insights into this month’s theme, reading and goals.

Download the Card Layout_Medicine Wheel New Moon Layout PDF (white background), one of my favourites, or use your own layout/spread.

If you choose the theme “Authentic Self Reborn” consider:
🌙 where and when you are living authentically… or not
🌙 where and when you keep your true voice, and Self, hidden… or not
🌙 where and when you nurture your Self, feel connected to your Self… or not
🌙 where and when your creativity births and flows with ease and abundance… or not.

Connect to The Mother energy to support you in your Soul Work and (re)birthing your true Self.

MOON WHEEL CHART
This month, consider working with a Moon Wheel Chart. I’ve been using one for about 18 months and it has provided great insights for me into my energetic patterns and state of mind.

The process can be as simple or as charged miles as you wish. For instance, you can enter the details of your reading into the centre of the Moon Wheel Chart and then use the chart to track your energy throughout the lunar journey. You can track any number of things, whatever is important to you: Moon flow (if you have one), ovulation, the day/date, periods of vivid dreaming, and any other factors that are important to you. I often note the card I pull each morning, and how many hours I slept.

GW452H361

Alder Moon, by Shekhinah Mountainwater

Why do I use a Moon Wheel Chart? Over time, charting helps me see and understand my patterns and cycles of energy as they relate to the lunar journey — where and when I am energized, tired, emotional, inspired, sleepless, hungry or restless, etc — and how that changes over the solar year, too.

And even though I am in the Crone years — postmenopausal — I have found that my hormones and energy still synchronize with Grandmother Moon’s journey and that I am most definitely in tune with the Waxing and Waning of Mama Earth’s seasons too.

One of my favourites is the Moon Wheel created by Shekhinah Mountainwater, which you can find and download here.

New Moon Blessings!

Passionate Transformation with the New Moon in Taurus

Wisdom from Seanmháthair Gealach (Grandmother Moon)
New Moon in Taurus arrived at 5:16 AM Pacific Time
Day 1 of the lunar journey
Our Theme for this month: Passionate Transformation. Love Your Self
New Moon Wisdom: first, pause & reflect

IMG_0230

We are in that wonderful time of new beginnings… a New Moon today and Beltaine (the first fire festival of Summer) next week. And if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, the Wheel of the Year is turning towards Samhain, which is actually the start of the new Celtic year (just as the Celtic day starts at sunset). So very powerful!

But not every new journey starts easily. Sometimes we are still letting go of baggage from our previous journey(s), and at other times our Inner Garden may not be quite ready for the new growth. We may have to do a little weeding or fertilizing. We even may be looking at other gardens and thinking “yes, it’s greener / more beautiful over there!”

So, first, take some time to pause and reflect during this deep dark powerful New Moon before you start your new journey when LaLuna starts to glimmer in that sliver of a Waxing Crescent in a day or two.

And as you do, remember this: each and every flower must crack out of its seed, then grow through the dirt before it can bloom and face the Sun. The darkness will soon pass as you move into the light.

Each flower is worthy of the sunshine.

Each flower has its own unique beauty and purpose.

“A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms.”
– Zen Shin

Open up and bloom your own way.

There’s plenty of sunshine for us all.

SOUL WORK FOR THE NEW MOON
This week between the New Moon and Beltaine is so powerful and ultimately passionately transformative. Reach deep into your Wise Inner Self — the Inner Garden of your soul — and create big bold audacious goals for this month and for the coming months. . . not short-term goals but rather something that is transformative for YOU.

Beltaine (aka Beltane aka Bealtaine) comes from the Irish Gaelic words for “Mouth of Fire”, and marks the beginning of “the merry month of May”. This fire festival is associated with love, fertility, sensuality, and relationships.

But let’s not forget the most important relationship we all have, and that is the relationship with our Self. Many of us neglect the Self as we care for others, as we put others first, as we look after our families.

As you create your goals for the new Moon and for Beltaine (or Samhain), be sure to embrace that fire energy and create goals for nurturing and passionately transforming your Self… your health, your vitality, your mind, your personal development, your abundance.

In your New Moon reflections, tarot/oracle readings or shamanic journeys, be mindful of this. Keep this theme in your awareness as the wisdom you need to transform and move forward reveals itself and opens up the possibilities for your transformative goals.

SOUL QUESTIONS
Some Soul Questions to consider (but definitely create your own as well) in your New Moon reflections and work:

🌸 How healthy is my Inner Garden? Does it need a little fertilizer? Are there weeds to be pruned or pulled, then composted?

🌼 What blossoms (goals) can transform my Garden to a place of beauty, tranquility, and abundance?

🌺 How will I maintain my Garden?

🌹 How will having this Inner Garden transform my life and positively affect those I love?

🌷 How can I honour myself and manifest love for myself even more?

New Moon Blessings !

Rituals for the Pisces New Moon

Wisdom from Seanmháthair Gealach (Grandmother Moon)
Day 1, 🌚🌑 Dark Moon / New Moon in Pisces AND a Solar Eclipse
Sunday, February 26 at 6:58 AM Pacific Time (14:58 UTC)
🌙
We have another powerful start to the lunar month, with a Solar Eclipse (visible in parts of South America and Africa). An auspicious time for fresh starts!

For me, the New Moon energy doesn’t really begin until we see that first glimmer of light of the Waxing Crescent in two to three days. For now, we are in the Dark Moon, completing the last journey, embracing Grandmother Moon’s deep and powerful Yin energy, and strongly connected to our own wisdom and intuition. We are guided by The Crone, known by many names: Hecate, An Cailleach, Cerridwen, Hella, Lilith, Baba Yaga, Kali, and others.

Take this time to reflect, and refocus your visions and dreams for the next Journey. When we work with our Crone energies, we can face our fears squarely and courageously and can learn from them. We can accept our strengths, and embrace the fierce wildness within.

And like the Phoenix, this phase is not just an ending, a completion, it is a beginning. . .  a rebirth of light from the darkness. With the new light of La Luna’s crescent, our journey begins again. We start a new adventure. But unlike The Fool’s Journey, starting with a clean slate, we carry forward with the wisdom from our recent explorations. We still have endless possibilities but perhaps more clarity as we focus our intentions and incorporate the wisdom from our Dark Moon reflections.

This moon also embraces the coming Equinox (Monday, March 20, 2017 at 10:29 UTC) which for some signifies the official start of Spring (in the Northern Hemisphere) and Autumn (in the Southern Hemisphere). . . a time of shifting energies, towards balance and equilibrium, and an opportunity to review and refocus.

SOUL RITUALS FOR THE NEW MOON

Do you have rituals or practices for the New Moon? If not, consider some of these:

🌙  Do a New Moon tarot or oracle reading. At each new lunar phase — First Quarter, Full Moon, Third Quarter, etc — check in with the reading and draw additional cards for further illumination as you work through the month.

🌙  Start a lunar chart or Moon Wheel (so many great tools out there) to track your energy and emotions throughout the month to see how the phases manifest in your life: sleep patterns, emotions, flow days and, of course, the lunar phases (new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, etc)

🌙  Set up a new altar, or add new elements for Spring (Northern Hemisphere) or Fall (Southern Hemisphere)

🌙  Start a new herbal tincture, decoction or glycerite. I do this every new moon! This month, I’m starting a cooling tincture for the liver (I am full of Fire and over-stimulated at the moment, so need to dampen it) using a recipe from Rosemary Gladstar (one part burdock root, one part dandelion root and 1/4 part cinnamon bark). I’m preparing it two ways: one batch with ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) and one with alcohol (vodka).

🌙  Create a (re)Vision Board for the coming new season. This can help you get back on track with any New Year’s Resolutions you may have created. Or maybe something new may be revealed! In the Northern Hemisphere, the sap is starting to rise. . .  definitely an inspiration for new things and new visions. In the Southern Hemisphere, Mama Earth is starting to reap the abundance of Summer. .  time to reflect on your own harvest and start to prepare for the coming Autumn and Winter. This exercise can be done with magazines, or with various collage/photo apps on your laptop, tablet or smart phone. This exercise can be a great bonding experience, too, if done in a group.

Explore the Women’s Wisdom Wheel Spread with us on November 29th

Join Jackie Ladouceur and Della Ratcliffe on the Tuesday, November 29th at 10 AM Pacific Time (yes, it’s the New Moon!) for an on-line exploration of the Women’s Wisdom Wheel, a new spread using your favourite oracle or tarot cards.

Each month, Grandmother Moon starts a new journey, giving us an opportunity for new beginnings and for reflecting on the previous month. And, as we move into Winter in the Northern Hemisphere, this is also a time for even deeper reflection and for planning our next year.

As Mother Earth starts her draw her energy downward, deep into the ground, we can do the same…. looking back at the past year and what we learned, what we have gratitude for… and what we want for the next year.

The Women’s Wisdom Wheel is a tool to help us do that, using our favourite oracle or tarot deck, and can be used at any time of the year, but can be most powerful at the New Moon and the New Year (in the Celtic Wheel of the Year that was earlier this month, at Samhain).

In this Introduction / Q&A, Jackie and Della will:
🌙 introduce you to the Women’s Wisdom Wheel spread
🌙 demonstrate a live reading (and ask for YOUR interpretations)
🌙 share some Soul Questions you can use for each direction on the Wheel
🌙 give you a special preview of Jackie’s beautifully designed Oracle of Horse Wisdom
🌙 answer YOUR questions about the Wheel and its concepts… and your cards!

PREPARATION
🌙 We will be doing a live demo of the Women’s Wisdom Wheel Spread during this event, so open up YOUR favourite Oracle or Tarot deck and join in…. See what wisdom shows up for you!
🌙 You may also want to have a journal or other device to take notes.
